S2 E38: walls

Image
There are a few processes where I like to use “walls” as the barriers at metered intervals. “Gates” are a little too soft, after all you just kinda *open* a gate and walk on through. No these processes I’m referring to had barriers you gotta punch through. Stages you have to breakdown. It’s aggressive, meaty, visceral. The processes?  Inebriation and motivation. You know the first wall when you’re drinking right? It’s the two beer sweet spot where you could fall asleep standing. If you don’t forcibly have your third or fourth drink, you ain’t making it past eight buddy. Breakthrough that wall and your in drunk town for a while…but here comes the next wall: memory. Stop at 7 and you’ll have a good night but an extra shot is breaking on through to brown and black outs. Of course the last wall is throwing up so have fun. Aaaaaaaaaanyways, let’s talk the walls of motivation. For me, the first wall of a new project or endeavor is when the excitement of the change loses its novelty. That...

Routines make winners. With very little exception, the elite in just about any field develop tailored, detailed routines to maximize practice in one’s field while making the time they aren’t practicing efficiently planned in order to accomplish other requisite tasks. I used to love me a good routine to get me through work, play, fitness, and a miscellaneous category we’ll call potpourri. Routines are king. I say that to say I’m finely tailoring a routine right now that makes knocking out everything expected of me in an efficient manner in order to maximize recovery, scholastic success, and physical and mental fitness. Shits coming together and we love to hear it…especially two weeks out from Squatober. Let’s start with the fitness side: I’m playing with bars again baby. Working max has been established as 100lb squat and 200lb deadlift. Sure it’s super light, but if i reframe those exercises as mobility and flexibility drills with a secondary benefit of strength then I’m not so embarra...

This one is gonna be weird. See for starters, i don’t have much in the way of reporting about from last week. Like, i worked out three times, did my PMP class, weighed in at five star (my weight stayed the same but my goal is to drop 8-10% BF by December), had a nerdy Sunday, did all the therapies…but that’s kind of it. Short entry if I just keep it there right? By weird I mean it’s going to sorta just be stream of consciousness. See last week kinda stunk on the grounds that i spent most of it under a great deal of stress that hung on me more than usual. And living in that fog is just frustrating. It’s super mental, i spend way too much time in my dome analyzing and over analyzing different stressors and just how visceral of a reaction am I going to have to them. Saw a post the other day that beautifully described it: basically I’ve spent enough time invested in mental health to recognize thinking traps and cognitive distortions but have been flooded with the intrusive negative th...

Ok so like, last week was a disappointing week and spent most of it carrying a funk around. Put off the entry so long that now it’s the following Monday and it makes all of the sense in the world to get back on track. So yeah, here we go again. I don’t benefit from the combined entries, because now i have to walk back through my calendars and figure out what happened that was significant enough to remember. I will say that two weeks ago is infinitely easier to remember because my father in law was here that week. We purposefully didn’t do a damn thing all week (i cheated on Tuesday to do my PMP class) and rewatched all of the mission impossible movies. Great time, 10/10 would recommend to anyone with a week to spare. Capped off that week with my 6 week post op appt where I was freed from the brace and it was just the coolest week of the summer. Legitimately, i got lucky with my in-laws because they kind of rock. Oh and I got a LOTR tattoo, that was fun. DOUBLE OH, my BJJ gym (owne...
